Is luxury vinyl flooring durable?

Hardwearing is just one of the many reasons why this flooring is so popular. Luxury vinyl (LVF) has four layers, making it five times thicker than the original vinyl. It also has a top clear, strong, melamine coating that protects it all from scratches and scuffs.

Affordable, high-end style

With images inspired by nature, this flooring provides true-to-life photos of wood, stone, and tile, taken digitally, and are clear and vibrant with knots, grains, swirls, growth rings, veining variations, and brilliant colors and patterns. Micro beveling and embossing add depth, design, and textured looks, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed.

The material can be cut into strips and mounted on boards to mimic hardwood, called luxury vinyl plank or LVP, adding realism. There are also groutable squares, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) echo stone, and ceramic tile.

The waterproof capabilities make it ideal for wet spaces like the kitchen or bath, but the design options make it suitable for any room, from the living area to the home library. We also see it in some high-end homes where once nothing but the real thing would be considered.

Waterproof vs. water-resistant

Those terms aren't the same. When something is waterproof, it's impenetrable to liquid and made from entirely waterproof materials, in this case, vinyl, and the core. There are no special coatings to help guard the floor. Water-resistant products repel, but only for a limited time; if not wiped quickly, they eventually soak, stain and ripple.

LVF is also low maintenance, requiring only a regular (daily, if possible) sweeping and periodic mopping. Installation can be an uncomplicated floating floor where the pieces click together and mat and then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue.
